19th century mid-Lithuanian Romantic poet, Catholic priest, bishop of Seina, linguist, mathematician, Bible translator.
His literary pseudonyms were Bangputys, Jurksztas Smalaūsis, Jurksztas, Smalaūsis and Baronas.
The verses were written in Polish at first, then in Lithuanian. He also wrote small works in Lithuanian quite early. According to brother Anupra, around 1851 A. Baranauskas wrote "Vaina vilkos i shepherds" and "Memoirs of Little Days". in 1853 October 27 while working in Vainute, he wrote a short fable "Góra i dolina". 1853-1854 wrote several more poems in Lithuanian that have not reached us. His poem "Saulatekis" is from this period. in 1855 March 30-31 wrote several of his 1854-1855 letters to his parents in Anykščiai. a collection of Polish poems. in 1857 wrote a larger (over 70 poems) in his 1851-1857. a collection of Polish poetry. in 1857 wrote the "Song of Songs", which in 1883 first printed by Auszra.
The most significant works of A. Baranauskas are the collection of fourteen songs "Journey to Peterburkan" (1858-1859) and the romantic poem "Anykščių šilelis" (1858-1859), in which the nature of the native land is sung, the antiquity of Lithuania is idealized, as a contrast with the realities of that period the spiritual connection between nature and man is revealed, the national oppression of the Lithuanian nation is protested. First published in 1860. In the calendar of Lauryns Ivinskis (first separate edition - 1905), the poem is considered a classic of Lithuanian literature.
Works of Lithuanian studies
Antanas Baranauskas distinguished himself as a researcher of the Lithuanian language and laid the foundations for Lithuanian dialectology. He accumulated dialectal materials and compiled the first classification of dialects of the Lithuanian language (Notes on Lithuanian language and vocabulary / Zametki o litovskom jazyke i slovare 1898). He translated A. Šleicher's grammar of the Lithuanian language, wrote the grammar Kalbomokslis Lithuanian language (partially published in 1896), created the original common spelling and such terms that are now widely used as: adjective, vowel, diphthong, numeral, dictionary, dialect, sentence, spelling and rule. He collected Lithuanian folklore, wrote down song melodies.
