Constantine Caravassilis is a highly respected composer of Hellenic-descent, regarded by Jazz & Tzaz as the most important of his generation. His music is known for its exceptional sense of musicality and individual style, consistently delivering emotional and energetic compositions. Born into a family of musicians in Toronto, he spent his formative years in Pythagorion on the culturally rich Samos Island in Greece. Caravassilis founded and directed the chorus and traditional orchestra of the Multi-Branch Lyceum of Samos City, where he wrote his first theatre score at the young age of sixteen. He is an award-winning composer, receiving three gold medals for composition in the 4th International Composition Competition of Volos, as well as the Mississauga Symphony Orchestra Young Composer's Competition. Caravassilis has received numerous commissions from soloists, ensembles, and organizations all over the world. His extensive output includes seven concertos, and works for chamber, orchestral, vocal, and electroacoustic media. His music has been performed in countless countries, including Canada, the U.S., Germany, France, Denmark, the U.K., Wales, Russia, Belarus, Sweden, Israel, Greece, Cyprus, Turkey, and Japan. Caravassilis has been composer-in-residence with multiple organizations, including the Contemporary Opera Lab, Open Strings Festival, and Cantabile Chamber Singers. In the past year, he has premiered several works, including a song cycle for mezzo-soprano Ariana Chris, Rhapsody No. 2 - Visitations, Father, Into Thy Hands I Commend My Spirit, and Message in a Bottle, which was commissioned for the 25th anniversary of the Canadian Composer's Orchestra.
