British composer, pioneer and popularizer of minimalist music, leader of the Michael Nyman band, pianist, musicologist, photographer, cinematographer.
Maiklas Naiman creates music for drama theater, dance, opera, and fashion shows. However, this multi-talented personality is most widely known in his homeland of the United Kingdom and beyond for his music for motion pictures. Mr. Naiman's music played in the famous film "The Piano" by director Jane Campion, and the composer collaborated with director Peter Greenaway on the creation of 11 films.
Nyman studied at Sir George Monoux Grammar School, then studied at King's College London under Alan Bush.
in 1961 he was admitted to the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he devoted most of his energy and time to piano lessons and seventeenth-century baroque music. During his studies, Mr. Nyman was in close contact with his teachers - Thurston Dart and Alan Bush, who said that music that does not obey traditional harmony and tones is the only music worth creating. They tried to convey these ideas to the young Michael, who tried to write such music, but in 1964 chose the path of musicologist and music critic.
Maiklas Naiman creates music for ensembles, symphony and string orchestras, a cappella choirs and such virtuosos as trombonist Christian Lindberg. The composer's choice of genres is also diverse. However, Naiman is most widely known for his music for motion pictures. After all, it was the music played in Jane Campion's film "The Piano" that earned the composer not only world fame, but also Golden Globe, BAFTA, and American Film Institute awards.
Maiklos Naiman's work is not remotely reminiscent of baroque music, which the composer admired while studying at the Royal Academy of Music in London. M. Naiman is one of the most famous representatives of minimalist music, so the music he creates is based on the elements characteristic of this musical trend. The composer's works end and begin unexpectedly, the ears of the listeners are played by combining extremely harmonious and melodic musical sections that convey the impression of chaos, and there are many repetitions.
In total, Maiklas Naiman has composed six operas and music for more than twenty films.
