He composes music for movies, drama performances, and dance productions. Creates visual art, organizes personal and group exhibitions.
V. Tarasov started playing jazz at the age of 14 in Arkhangelsk, in the local sailors' club. 1961-1966 studied at Arkhangelsk Higher Music School. in 1966 began studying at the Leningrad Conservatory, but was expelled from studies in the same year due to his advocacy of jazz.
in 1967 moved to Vilnius. Played jazz in "Neringa" cafe with Vyacheslav Ganelin and double bass player Grigory Talas. He worked in the Symphony Orchestra of the National Philharmonic, the brass band "Trimitas". Since 1984 - Soloist of the State Philharmonic.
Since 1970 worked with V. Ganelin at the Vilnius builders' culture house, played as a duet at the "Gintarinės triūbos" festival in Kaunas, as well as at jazz festivals in Gorky (1970) and Donetsk (1971). In Sverdlovsk, he met the saxophonist Vladimir Chekasin. Soon after V. Chekasin's relocation in 1971 to Vilnius, the famous trio Ganelin - Tarasov - Chekasin, or GTČ, was born. V. Tarasov wrote the autobiographical book "Trio" (White Bows, 1998) about this collective. Together with this trio, V. Tarasov played at many festivals and released recordings.
1980-1987 V. Tarasov was elected the best drummer of the USSR, in 1987. jazz musician of the year No. 2, 1986 European drummer No. 2 in 1991. formed the "Lithuanian Art Orchestra" of Lithuanian academic music and jazz musicians.
1999-2003 - Artistic director of the LRDT, there he directed the performance "Moscow - Petuški" (auth. Venediktas Jerofejevas). in 2009 "Triumph" award.
