In 1996-2002, Emilis Velyvis studied at the Vilnius Academy of Arts and obtained a master's degree. He also studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. During an interview with "Lietuvos rytas" in 2022, Vėlyvis said that he "degraded" from art to cinematography: "I think I'm the best director among painters."
In order to participate in various projects, Emilis Vėlyvis moved to Stuttgart, Germany in 2003. There he made his first short film "Lithuanians in the EU". Around the same time, he was working on his first feature film, Zero. Lilac Lithuania" script. The film gained international recognition immediately after its release in 2006. appeared on cinema screens. This was followed by Zero 2, Zero 3, and other short and feature films.
He teaches directing to students of the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theater.
