He started playing the guitar at the age of eleven, and by the age of thirteen he was already playing in the variety ensemble of the Priekulė Culture House. Later, before serving in the army, he played music in the Klaipėda ensembles "Žērutis" and "Kopų balsai". Extraordinary musical talents ensured him easy service in the Soviet army: from "Voices of the Hills" he went directly to the Klaipėda military orchestra. During his service, he also played at the Officers' House dance evenings. At the end of the service, in 1973 participated in the contest of pop song performers "Vilnius Towers", where he earned the title of diploma winner and "audience favorite". This was followed by a trip to the international competition of young performers in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), which gathered performers from all over the Soviet Union and former socialist countries. The performer returned from this competition with the title of laureate. After service in 1974 In January, he received an invitation from Romualds Bieliauskas, the leader of the ensemble "Nerija", which was becoming increasingly popular at the time, to join the collective.
