Graduated from the 1st secondary school of Liepāja (1975), the theory department of the Emilis Melngailis Liepaja music secondary school (1979) and the composition class of LVK Jānis Ivanovs (1983). The composer has focused more on non-academic genres in his creative work, however, he has maintained an interest in academic music and also writes academic works.
During his studies, he created the experimental instrumental music ensemble Zodiac (1979), whose album Disco Alliance (1980) achieved widespread success and sold at least 20 million copies worldwide.
An important place in the composer's work is occupied by musicals and rock operas. The most successful should be mentioned the rock opera Kaupēn, my darling, which is included in the Latvian Cultural Canon, Sphinx, Early Rust, etc. The composer successfully cooperates with the Latvian National Opera and Ballet, where two academic operas for children have been staged - the Bird Opera (2000), which has been performed for more than 150 performances, and the Puppet Opera, which will return to the repertoire of the Opera Theater in a renewed version in the near future. From 1999 - 2002 was the head of the musical part of the Liepāja Theater.
Among the works of Jānis Lūsēns, a large role is given to both solo and choral songs. Among them are also vocal symphonic works - cantatas LIIV, Magnificat, choral symphony Deep Breath, cycle Domus mea. Lüsen's songs have been performed several times at the General Latvian Song Festival and the School Song Festival.
The composer's contribution to Latvian music has been respected and appreciated. Lüsēns received the Latvian Theaters of the Year Award as the best composer (in 1996 for the music for the play Santa Krusa, in 1999 for the rock opera Kaupēn, my beloved), the Latvian Grand Music Award (for the musical performances in 2000 and contribution to the theater music genre) and AKKA/ LAA Copyright Infinity Award in 2003. Since 1987, Jānis Lūsēns has been a member of the Composers' Union.
In recent years, the composer devotes more time to instrumental chamber music and improvisation.
