He graduated from the Trade Academy in Prague, worked in a bank, as a journalist. He took part in World War I and was captured by Russia. In 1918, he came to Moscow and joined the Russian Communist Party (Bolsheviks), served in the Red Army. In 1920, at the suggestion of the III International, he returned to Prague; soon began to live a bohemian life.
