Brother of Algimantas Puipa. 1985 graduated from the Lithuanian Art Institute (graphic arts; studied with A. Švėgždas, R. V. Gibavičius, J. Kuzminskis). Since 1992 member of Grupė 1. 1987-88 worked at Vyturys publishing house in Vilnius. 1995-97 taught at the Vilnius Academy of Arts.
His work is dominated by images from the life of artists, bohemians, marginals, the Lithuanian countryside, its customs, vanishing traditions, and scenes of family life. Realistic, usually documentary-accurate, figurative compositions (mostly in interiors) are like cinematic shots with an unusual perspective of the object, space and human being, with both real and spirit world characters.
Classical and modernist intertwining, irony, grotesque. A subtle connection between art and literature is realised - comments are inserted to complement the action and describe the characters. The compositions alternate between a precisely completed drawing and its sketched outlines. He worked in a variety of techniques: silkscreen, colour lithography, mainly watercolour. The most important works include Kosmauskas' Morning, Sculptor Alfonso Vaura's Workshop (both 1988), The Widow's Debt Owner, Cutting the Pig in Šešuoli (both 1991), Jacovskis' Family (1992), Father's Bathing, Child's Bathing (both 1994), The House on Kalvarijų Street (1997). He has created book illustrations (M. Valančiaus Mikė Melagėlis 1991). He created so-called living paintings: with others, he staged works by famous painters from around the world.
