Brokenchord is the stage name of Ernestas Kaušylas, a Lithuanian electronic music producer and multi-instrumentalist originally from Utena, Lithuania. He began making music around 2007 at the age of 16, influenced by hip-hop beats and artists like J Dilla and Flying Lotus. His early work was discovered by British radio host Mary Anne Hobbs, which led to a remix opportunity for Radiohead’s "Give Up The Ghost" from their 2011 album The King of Limbs.
Brokenchord's music blends electronic sounds with ambient and droned guitar textures. His debut full-length album, Endless Transmission (2017), reflects this hybrid style and incorporates environmental sounds like car alarms and ambulance sirens, capturing a snapshot of his surroundings and mindset at the time. He describes his music as personal and evolving, focusing on expressing his identity and feelings, often channeling a sense of alienation and detachment into his compositions.
As a live performer and DJ, Brokenchord emphasizes improvisation and interaction with the audience, often reinterpreting his studio tracks in performance. He frequently releases singles to maintain creative momentum and avoid accumulating unreleased material. His sound is rooted in electronic production but also heavily features real instruments like electric guitar, bass, and sampled drums, which he processes and transforms digitally.
