1960 graduated from Eržvilkas secondary school. in 1965 graduated from Kaunas Polytechnic Institute (now Kaunas University of Technology), majored in electrical engineering. 1971-1974 was a doctoral student at the Department of Philosophy, Law and Sociology at the Institute of History, defended his thesis in 1981. Vilnius University. 1960-1962 worked as an electrician, 1964-1970. He worked as a technician and engineer at the Institute of Agricultural Design. 1966-1971 Assistant, later docent, philosophy department, Kaunas Polytechnic Institute. 1974-1982 Responsible secretary of the Kaunas branch of the Writers' Union of the Lithuanian SSR, 1986-1988. secretary of the board, 1988-1989 chairman of the board, 1989-1994 Chairman of the Lithuanian Writers' Union and its board. 1994-2008 Docent of the Department of Lithuanian Literature at the Vilnius Pedagogical University (now the Lithuanian University of Education), 1999-2008. head of this department, since 2011 professor of the Department of Lithuanian and Comparative Literature. 1998-2012 The editor-in-chief and compiler of the Lithuanian University of Education's continuous research publication "Text Mysteries", since 2012. member of the editorial board, head of the literary text analysis laboratory. Member of the editorial boards of the journal "Žmogus ir žods", the cultural magazine "Santara", and the almanac "Varpai". Full member of Lithuanian Comparative Literature Association, European Network of Comparative Literatures, Lithuanian Academy of Sciences. From 2018 – academician emeritus. His prose works (novels, short stories, short stories, essays) have been translated into a dozen foreign languages.
