After studying ballet at the Maribor Conservatory of Music and Ballet, he continued his studies at the International Academy of Classical Dance in Kyiv, Ukraine. in 2006 became a dancer of the Maribor Ballet troupe, where he began to work closely with its artistic director, choreographer Edward Clug. As a member of the Maribor Ballet troupe and principal soloist, he toured in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Italy, Germany, Hungary, Portugal, Sweden, Belgium, France, Russia, Ukraine, South Korea, Singapore, Colombia, Brazil, Mexico, Canada, USA and elsewhere. Appeared at prestigious world dance festivals and theaters, such as the Latin American Theater Festival in Bogotá, the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, the Maria Theater Festival "White Night Stars" in St. Petersburg, the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow, the Royal Swedish Opera and elsewhere.
Gajus Žmavacs performed roles in the productions of many famous choreographers, among whom we can mention such authorities of modern ballet as Johan Ingeris, Mauro Bigonzetti, Jean Christophe Maillot, Staša Zurovacius and Zorans Markovičius.
in 2013 made his debut as a choreographer, creating the choreography for the one-act ballet "Home" at the Maribor Theater, which was performed at the Contemporary Choreography Evening together with the ballets of Staša Zurovacius and Zoran Marković. Since then, he has been working at the Slovenian National Theater in Maribor, where he creates choreography for ballet, drama and opera performances as a guest choreographer. in 2015 At the invitation of Tomaž Rode's, president of the Association of Slovenian Ballet Artists, he created the choreography for "Four Last Songs" based on Richard Strauss' posthumous song cycle of the same name. in 2017 created the choreography for the production of Richard Wagner's musical drama "Gold of the Rhine" (directed by Igor Pison) at the Maribor Theater. In the same year, he won the first prize at the III Young Slovenian Choreographers Competition for the composition "Yesterdays".
in 2018 SNT has created another one-act ballet "Maestro" for the Maribor Ballet Troupe, shown together with one-act ballets by Edward Clug and Alexander Ekman. in 2019 in the same theater he created the choreography for the production of Charles Gounod's opera "Faust" (directed by Pier Francesco Maestrini), and in 2020 – his first full evening ballet Little Creation, consisting of eight solo and duet numbers performed by the Maribor Ballet Company and guest dancers. In the same year, in collaboration with the Ukrainian ballet dancer Tetiana Svetlična, he created for her a solo composition "Creation Acrylique" based on Maurice Ravel's "Bolero", which premiered at the Šibenik Dance Festival (Croatia) last summer.
