The idea that the clothes worn hide the body, but reveal the characteristics of a person's character, social status or lifestyle, is not new. But the way this Dutch artist talks about it is very unique indeed.
G. Koster creates costumes-sculptures, which he eventually began to capture in photographs. Standing in the showroom in high heels, with your head hidden in a box or in any other unusual position is physically very difficult. Half an hour or an hour in the exhibition halls did not satisfy the artists. She wanted to extend the life of living sculptures. Photography served this purpose well.
Usually, in people's photos, their facial expressions and eyes speak, while in G. Koster's works the main message is sent by the costume - the face of the sculpture is hidden: in a box, a house, a top hat, a shopping bag and other original ways.
The artist's work is full of irony, gentle criticism, sometimes biting and always a mystery.
In G. Koster's work, it is the costume that tells us the story of a person and his relationship with the surrounding world. The artist does it in an indescribably suggestive way, she creates a magnetizing mystery that is riveting to solve. Behind each of her works is a message that visitors to the exhibitions try to read, take selfies, lie on the floor to look inside the sculpture.
The artist often receives witty comments from the audience. For example, after inspecting the work "Gespikkeld" ("Dotted"), the man sent G. Koster a comment: "You are right. Blood bag, the best thing that can happen. You see a living example in front of you - I am a product of cross-breeding."
At the end of 2017, the artist embarked on a new creative adventure. At Kaunas Dance Theater "Aura" she created and sewed costumes for the dance performance "Sprendimas" with her own hands. Looking at the outfits created by the artist, it is clear that an exceptionally interesting premiere awaits. The costumes, which are not characteristic of modern dance, inevitably dictate their own rules, so it can be assumed that both the choreographer Birutė Letukaitė and the dancers of "Auras" will surprise with unusual choreographic solutions.
