He studied art at J. Mackevičius' painting studio in Kaunas. After leaving Lithuania during the Second World War, he studied painting at the art school in Darmstadt under P. Thesing. In 1948 he moved to Australia, and from 1953 to Sydney. In 1956, he co-founded the painters' group "Šešios kryptys". Since 1960 member of the group "Kite".
During his early career he painted cubist still lifes ("Still Life with Mask" 1960, influenced by Polis Cézanne, Pablo Picasso). Influenced by Indian culture and philosophy, he painted distinctive symbolic compositions ("Unconditional" 1969, "Nibbala and Samsara" 1971, "Black Moon" 1981), landscapes {"Landscape" 1975, "Lake Congola" 1962), lithographs ("Melissa" 1963)
