Saulius Jokužys was born in 1953 in Gargždai, Klaipėda district. He became interested in photography as a child and has continued his interest in the art of capturing and interpreting images ever since. His professional experience is also related to photography: he has worked as a photographer at the factory "Progresas", the weekly newspaper "Lietuvos žvejys", and for six years he was a photocorrespondent for the daily newspaper "Klaipėda". He has not forgotten the art of photography, having become the owner of a publishing house-printing house. Here he publishes photo albums every year and presents the dissemination of photographic art. Among the most important publications are V. Karatiej's photo album "Signs of Presence", J. Danauskas' "Landscapes of Žemaitija", V. Straukas' "Neringa", A. Ostashenkov's "Another shore".
Since the foundation of the Klaipėda Branch of the Lithuanian Photographers' Union in 1976, S. Jokužys has been a member of the Union and has actively participated in various exhibitions, plein-air exhibitions and seminars organised by the Branch. During these years he has also held 4 solo exhibitions.
He has been impressed by the great Lithuanian photographers A. Sutkus, V. Straukas, V. Butyrinas, R. Rakauskas, A. Macijauskas and others. Saulius himself has been searching for his creative vocation for a long time: he has tried different genres of photography, possibilities of expression and means of expression (from portraiture, photojournalism for the press to the social genre of everyday life), he has created the photographic cycles "Rondo" (1978), "The Road" (1986-1999).
However, the motto of his life in photography was the nude photographs of R. Dichavičius. It was the latter works that prompted the author to take up the inexhaustible theme of the female body and the self, which S. Jokužys has been developing for almost three decades (since 1978) in the series "The Unrecognised World of a Woman".
Saulijus Jokuysys' nudes range from the tradition of the Lithuanian nude - the synthesis of the female body and nature - to interpretations of the figure in experimental space. However, one of the most striking solutions to the peculiar approach to women is seen in the latest works by Saul Jokužius. The atypical scale of the nudes, which grows to a poster format, transforms individual parts of the female body, details into aesthetically abstracted and clear forms, a kind of a play of geometric elements, where the focus is on the vibration of the body's surface, the metamorphic sculpture, and the contact between plane and line. Any background, context, situation, deep spatiality is abandoned. Additional details, narrative stories become simply unnecessary. There is only the body and its naturalness. It is not juxtaposed with anything, it is not compared to anything, it is not highlighted through the interaction with the environment. The clean and clear composition, the unexpected angles, the easy diffusion of the light - all this highlights the beauty of the body itself and the unknowability of the woman...
