In 1972 he founded The English Concert, a baroque orchestra playing instruments from the 15th and 18th centuries (which he led until 2003), and has recorded solo works (including Bach's Goldberg Variations and Partitas). Recent recordings include Bach's Well-Tempered Harpsichord and a unique arrangement of the Goldberg Variations by Josef Koffler. Principal Guest Conductor of the Royal Academy of Music Chamber Orchestra. He works regularly with the Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest in Amsterdam (Netherlands), the Deutsche Kammerphiharmonie in Bremen and the Mozarteumorchester in Salzburg (Germany). Artistic Director of the Anima Mundi Festival in Pisa and Principal Conductor of the Kioi Hall Chamber Orchestra in Tokyo. He was awarded the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1992 and the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1998.
