Hailed by Hugh Canning as the “Mozart tenor to watch”, Anthony Gregory is admired for his unique timbre, stage presence and musicality. Named by esteemed critic Rupert Christiansen as one of the future operatic stars, he was the 2015 winner of the Breakthrough Artists category by What’s On Stage following his appearance as Peter Quint & Prologue The Turn of the Screw for Glyndebourne on Tour. His successes include appearances with Glyndebourne Festival, Royal Ballet and Opera, English National Opera, Festival de Aix-en-Provence, Teatro Real in Madrid, Bergen Opera, Opernhaus Zürich, Scottish Opera and Norwegian National Opera in Oslo.
During the 2024/25 season Gregory makes some thrilling company and role debuts which see him on the stages of Greek National Opera as Achilles Iphigenie en Aulide, Opera di Roma as Oronte in Handel’s Alcina and singing the Title role in Mitradate, Re di Ponto in a return to Staatsoper Hamburg. He will also appear once again as Flute in Laurent Pelly’s staging of Britten’s A midsummer night’s dream at Opera Lausanne. On the concert platform he joins the Scottish Chamber Orchestra to perform Haydn’s Nelson Mass with conductor Maxim Emelyanychev.
Highlights from last season include his mainstage debut at the Royal Ballet and Opera, Covent Garden, as Ferrando Cosi Fan Tutte; a highly acclaimed company and role debut as the Leper in Messiaen Saint François d’Assise at the Elbphilharmonie with Staatsoper Hamburg; Almaviva Il Barbiere di Siviglia at Scottish Opera; Ferrando Così fan tutte at Opera North; and Acis Acis and Galatea at London’s Opera Holland Park.
Further appearances saw him perform at Bayerische Staatsoper as Pane La Calisto; Opernhaus Zürich for Christian Spuck’s ballet Monteverdi; Bergen Opera in the title role of Candide; Opéra de Rouen Normandie as Flute A Midsummer Night’s Dream; Norwegian National Opera as Don Ottavio in a new production of Don Giovanni; Teatro Real, Madrid and Festival de Aix-en-Provence as Oronte Alcina. A regular on all major British stages his appearances include: Peter Quint and the Prologue The Turn of the Screw, Don Ottavio, Vafrino Hipermestra, and Flute A Midsummer Night’s Dream, all in Glyndebourne; the world premiere of Stuart MacRae’s Anthropocene at Scottish Opera; the title role Lucio Silla for the Classical Opera Company; and Grimoaldo Rodelinda at the London Handel Festival conducted by Laurence Cummings; Shepherd L’Orfeo with the Royal Ballet and Opera at the Roundhouse. A former Harewood Artist at English National Opera, his many roles for the company included Colonel Fairfax Yeomen of the Guard, Cégeste in Philip Glass’ Orphée, Florizel in the world premiere of The Winter’s Tale, Nanki-poo The Mikado, Young Sailor Julietta, 1st Armed Man Die Zauberflöte, Borsa Rigoletto and Haemon Thebans.
Highly in demand in concert, Gregory has performed Mercurio in Caldara La concordia de’ pianeti with La Cetra Barockorchester Basel in Bucharest at the Enescu Festival and the Theater an der Wien conducted by Andrea Marcon; Damon Acis and Galatea with Trevor Pinnock in Nida, Carmina Burana with Lahti Symphony Orchestra conducted by Dalia Stasevska, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Český Krumlov International Music Festival conducted by Daniel Raiskin and with the Oslo Philharmonic. Particularly sought after for Handel’s Messiah, he has appeared as the tenor soloist with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, English National Opera, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Glyndebourne, Irish Baroque Orchestra at Wigmore Hall, the Dunedin Consort, Cadogan Hall and Wells Cathedral. He has appeared with Glyndebourne Orchestra and Chorus for Mozart Requiem; Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Britten Sinfonia, Les Arts Florissants and William Christie, Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, Oxford Bach choir and Three Choirs Festival in Bach’s St John Passion; Acis and Galatea at Stone Nest with La Nuova Musica and the London Handel Festival; Purcell Devotional Songs with The English Concert under the baton of Kristian Bezuidenhout; Satyavan in Holst’s Savitri with the Britten Sinfonia under Sir Mark Elder Bach; Mass in B Minor at the Edinburgh International Festival; Bach St Matthew Passion with BBC National Orchestra of Wales conducted by Harry Bicket; a recording with Irish Baroque Orchestra and Linn Records of Cousser The Applause of Mount Parnassus and Purcell Great Parent, Hail!; Britten Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings and Dr Maxwell/ Staff Officer in Mark-Anthony Turnage The Silver Tassie – both with the BBC Symphony Orchestra; Hugh Wood’s Scenes from Comus with BBC Symphony Orchestra at the BBC Proms; Schubert Rosamunde with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra; Haydn St Nicholas Mass and Britten St Nicholas for the St Luke’s Music Society; Monteverdi Vespers with the Armonico Consort; and a solo recital at the Lufthansa Baroque Festival.
