Kaunas Wind Instrument Orchestra "Ąžuolynas" (chief conductor Giedrius Vaznys) is one of the symbols of the city of Kaunas, in 2021. to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the activity. Since its establishment in 1961 the main function of the orchestra is concerts, events and celebrations of the Temporary Capital. The most important city celebrations, delegations, and sportsmen's receptions cannot go by without the accent of " Ąžuolynas " instruments, the Friday orchestra parade on Laisvės avenue is memorable for many citizens. The orchestra also often invites to concert halls to listen to solo programs. The rich repertoire of " Ąžuolynas " includes programs of operas, operettas, musicals, jazz and pop concerts with bright soloists from Kaunas and the country.
The " Ąžuolynas " orchestra is a regular participant of Lithuanian and Kaunas city song festivals, republican and international wind instrument orchestra championships, competitions and festivals, making the name of the city of Kaunas famous in foreign countries as well. The educational programs organized by the collective have inspired more than one young person to pick up a musical instrument and knock on the parts of a music school.
The sounds of "Ažuolynas" repeatedly charmed the listeners of other Lithuanian cities. Organizers from all over Lithuania and other countries gladly invite the orchestra, characterized by professionalism and musical flexibility, to their events.
Since 1993 "Ėuolynas" started performing in foreign countries, choosing Northern Ireland, Italy, Finland, France, Switzerland, Poland as its geographical destinations. In 2019, he performed in the cultural capital of Italy, Matera.
Orchestra in 1961 was established at the Vytautas Culture and Recreation Park. Česlovas Šidlauskas became the leader and the first conductor. in 1973 the orchestra was given the name "Ažuolynas".
In the following years of creative activity, the collective was led by Jonas Lechavičius, Aloyzas Marcinkevičius, Marijonas Daunoravičius, Juozas Kučiauskas, Petras Tadaras, Vytautas Ramančiūnas and Ričardas Kukulskis. Giedrius Vaznys is currently the chief conductor of "Ažuolyno".
In 1979, at the then all-male puffer company. at the initiative of manager J. Kučiauskas, a choreographic group of girls joined. She was led by choreographer Stefanija Kazlauskienė for many years. Currently, the leaders of the group are Dainius Bervingis and Deimantė Ūsienė. The dancers not only decorate the festive processions of the orchestra, but also prepare separate original performances that the orchestra includes in its concert programs.
Since 2012 wind instrument orchestra " Ąžuolynas " is a part of the "Kaunos Santaka" concert institution.
