In the evening in Preila, as the wind dies down and the lagoon is caressed by the calm rays of the setting sun, time seems to stand still and stand still. Fifteen colourful years of the festival have passed in Preila. Overnight stays, rehearsals, arguments about programmes, rest between concerts and an unforgettable time of friendship and creativity.
The history-filled Preila Library, nestled next to the eternal lagoon, will be filled with time-stopping French chamber music that stops time and brings to life the colours and signs that graced the programmes of previous Festivals many years ago.
Gabriel Faure retired as director of the Paris Conservatoire in 1920 at the age of 75, giving him more time to create. His music, as if following Mozart's method of "not a single unnecessary note", became laconic, transparent and dissolved in the passage of time.
Olivier Messiaen was captured by the Germans at the beginning of the Second World War. In a prisoner-of-war camp, one of the most important chamber music masterpieces of the 20th century was born, a testimony to the irresistible power of human creativity and spirit in the most difficult situations. "The Quartet for the End of Time was composed and performed for the first time in the Gorlitz prisoner of war camp on 15 January 1941 by the composer and three prisoners (Jean le Boulaire, violin; Henri Akoka, clarinet; Etienne Pasquier, cello).
