Jharis Yokley feat. BIGYUKI (USA)
Jharis Yokley - dr, el, voc
Bigyuki - synth, keys, b, el
Drummer, producer, and songwriter Jharis Yokley is an explosive force of nature, whose work spans the hip hop, jazz, R&B, and rock scenes. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Yokley graduated from the prestigious Berkeley College and studied with jazz greats Terri Lynne Carrington and Danilo Perez. Once in Brooklyn, he quickly became an in-demand drummer, playing with artists such as Solange, Chance the Rapper, Ani DiFranco, Sleigh Bells, José James and DJ Premier. Yokley's drum videos have garnered worldwide attention and recognition from other drum masters including Questlove, Tony Royster Jr. and Jason McGerr. Vocalist, producer and drummer Jharis Yokley releases the first single "Move On" from his forthcoming debut album Sometimes, Late At Night. Produced by Yokley alongside José James, the track also features the synthesizer of Japanese keyboard maestro BIGYUKI.
BIGYUKI is New York's secret musical weapon. This Japanese keyboardist and songwriter with a wide vocabulary is able to create a whole new sound by incorporating elements of jazz, classical, hip hop, soul, rock, dance and electronica into his compositions. Classically trained at the Berklee College of Music, BIGYUKI has developed a unique musical identity that has been noticed by his colleagues Q-Tip, Bilal, Talib Kweli, Harvey Mason, Marcus Strickland, Mark Guiliana, Meshell Ndegeocello and others.
Yokley's album sessions were recorded live as the duo of Yokley and BIGYUKI at New York State's renowned Dreamland Studios and Los Angeles' avant-garde hub Lucy's Meat Market. But the writing process began in solitude. Inspired by hip-hop legends like J. Dilla, Yokley holed up in his room, creating the homemade beats that would become the basis of the album.
The result is music you've (definitely) never heard before. Yokley deftly and brilliantly transcends the confines of a drum album to create a work that pulsates with the latest experiments from the Brooklyn, Los Angeles and Tokyo electronica scenes.
Both with Move On and the surrounding debut LP Jharis Yokley feat. BIGYUKI arrive as leaders of new wave and experimental electronic R&B.
A fresh burst of originality is just part of what you can expect from this intriguing concert.
