"Julieta" looks at what life throws at us through different prisms, distorting and magnifying the picture. The play tells the story of a woman with many experiences and quirks, but also of the many nuances that old age brings with it. This visual, non-verbal, one-woman physical theatre and clown show is about the fracture between youth and old age.
Whether she is preparing for a date with her favourite singer on TV, cutting paintings in half to fit exactly where she wants them, smoothing out wrinkles with duct tape, or exercising by skiing while smeared with olive oil, Julieta explores the different stages of life and the ways in which our self-image changes and mutates accordingly.
"There is little talk about old age. Few words of respect are paid to older people who have reached the last stage of life. I loved being next to Juliet and feeling her take each step as she bids farewell to this earthly phase of her life. I watched her, at the age of 83, with a group of friends, the 'jazz widows', as they called themselves, going to a beauty salon to drink rum and Coke and smoke cigars, and I looked into her eyes behind thick-rimmed glasses, and it was a joy to watch, how she would blink her lips to the tune, how she would stick her little hand out of the window to see what the weather was like and then decide how to dress, and I heard her play the piano perfectly, not remembering who she was anymore.
Juliet is a free-spirited, joyful, creative, proud and flirtatious soul, a generous woman who has taught me a lot about the life I would like to have one day. To contain the humour and nuances of a life that was full to the brim with meaning, this piece inspired by the life of my grandmother Juliet goes beyond straightforward storytelling."
