The exhibition features nearly 200 works recreating fragments of the history of Vilnius and its iconographic development in different eras. This includes Vilnius of the 19th century, which is perhaps most comprehensively represented in the exhibition by Paulius Galaune's set of prints with predominantly lithographed images of Vilnius architecture and art monuments, and Vilnius of the 20th century. The city of the first half of the 20th century, which is told in detail by Mstislav Dobužinski's authentic landscapes documenting the cityscape, Jerzy Hoppen's exquisite etchings, as well as by a large group of exhibits recalling a particularly sensitive theme in the history of the city and the country as a whole - the almost two-decade-long occupation of Poland. The exhibition also includes paintings and graphic works from the period of the Soviet occupation, created during a controversial period of restrictions, but not lacking a bold modernist outlook, full of colour and mood - a kind of way of speaking in opposition to ideological themes. Romantic, nostalgic, mythologised, constructed on the basis of tension or a national narrative, the visual identity of Vilnius unfolds and, among the green bromides of the city, leads us through the labyrinths of the capital's spaces and time, through the arches chosen for the visual design of the exhibition, which symbolise the ascent of thoughts and spirit towards higher ideals, strength, aspiration, and the transition between the past and the future tense.
