Guoda Gedvilaitė's programme "Teacher and Pupil"
This is yet another concert of the International M. K. Čiurlionis Music Festival in Palanga, which will give you an unforgettable holiday experience.
Lithuanian music lovers will not need any introduction to pianist Guoda Gedvilaitė. The winner of first prizes at the International M. K. Čiurlionis, N. Rubinstein in Paris and F. Chopin in Hanover competitions, and many others, Gedvedova has been making Lithuania's name known far beyond the borders of our country. Every concert of the pianist becomes a real feast for listeners. Able to perform virtually any piano piece, G. Gedvilaitė chooses for her concert programmes only those opuses that have a deeper meaning and tell a story.
The pianist has chosen to perform on the stage of the legendary Palanga Kurhaus, where she has chosen works by the Romantics, who are linked by a strong relationship of teacher and student.
The first part of the programme will feature four piano pieces by the German pianist, conductor and composer Carl Reinecke from his 1865 cycle "Fantastic Plays of the Southern Lands".
Romantic composer C. Reinecke was a prominent figure in the world of German music. For more than three decades he led the famous Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and taught piano and composition at the conservatoire, and trained such stars as Edvard Grieg, Leoš Janacek, Isaac Albeniz, Max Bruch and others.
That is why Gedvilaitė will end the first part of the recital with her much-loved cycle Three Preludes on One Theme.
In the second part, the pianist will tell the story of other geniuses, such as the acquaintance of the eminent French composer and teacher Gabriel Faure and the influence of his talented student, Maurice Ravel, on his work.
Although the relationship between teacher and pupil was not a simple one, Ravel has been hailed as one of his teacher's most famous students, drawing on the invaluable experience of his teacher.
It is this part of the story that will be reflected in the works of Gabriel Fore and Maurice Ravel, which will be performed in the second part of this concert.
