PROGRAMME - Arthur Bumstein's Collisions (premiere in Lithuania)
Collisions - a 45-minute sonic experience for violin, flute, and organ by composer and sound artist Arthur Bumstein.
This piece uses very simple expanding chromatic arrangements that are transformed into melodies using a random number generator. The composer does not choose the melodic sequence of sounds, but leaves it to chance. This material is united by several ideas - elementary heterophony, simple forms of process, random melodies in a narrow chromatic range, a ritualistic/minimalistic approach to sound, limited performative expression and parallel tempi. The middle part of the piece sounds like an ancient Lithuanian multi-voice sutartinės music.
Composer Arturas Bumšteinas is a renowned sound artist not only in Lithuania but also abroad. He is interested in the problems of listening/hearing and self-made creative methods. He works at the crossroads of music, exhibition art, performance art, theatre and radio art disciplines, and his work has been presented by Holland Festival, Unsound, Ultraschall, Cricoteka, Operomania, Deutschlandfunk Kultur, the Contemporary Art Centre, Vartai Gallery, and the Berghain Kantine. In 2014, Bumšteinas was awarded the Palma Ars Acustica Prize, in 2017 he was a DAAD Artist-in-Residence at the Berlin Artists' Programme, and in 2019 he received the Boris Dauguvitis Earring for the integration of sound experiments into Lithuanian theatre contexts.
