From 5 March to 6 April 2024, the Vilnius Graphic Art Centre will host an exhibition of the work of Mikaloy Povilas Vilutis at the gallery Kairė-dešinė. Opening on 5 March 2024, 6 pm.
The exhibition presents early and recent works by Mikalaus Povilas Vilutis - prints, drawings and objects that have never been shown before. The exhibition is a glimpse into the artist's own work.
The exhibition consists of three parts. One room contains early drawings, or rather replicas of early drawings, which have become an integral part of the history of Lithuanian art in the second half of the 20th century. Vilutis presents these works in a highly effective way - the works are digitally enlarged, and the rich acrylic brushstrokes applied to the old drawings bring out the expressiveness of the works.
The expressive manner of the early period is also repeated in the newest ink drawings. Unlike the early ones, the human figures are replaced by human-animal hybrids of indescribable nature - witnesses to the identity of the beast and human nature, which the artist has read in Scripture. The granite sculpture Man (2014), which Vilutis sculpted with the encouragement of his brother, the sculptor Kristupas Vilutis, is on display next to the exhibition.
The third part of the exhibition presents the most recent works created between 2021 and 2023 in collaboration with the fragrance makers Smells Like Spells. At the initiative of the brand's founders, handmade porcelain vessels for scented candles have been decorated with the artist's drawings. The series of porcelain objects, which have already been spread in private collections in Lithuania and abroad, well reflects the diversity and versatility of Vilutis' work. These works reflect the brightly coloured Wilutian style and the Wilutian conception of beauty that emerged in the 1980s and 1990s.
