The opera Tristan und Isolde is said to have transformed music, and its influence continues today. The philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche called it "a true opus metaphysicum", the writer Thomas Mann called it magnificently morbid, all-consuming and magical. It is the crossroads of Richard Wagner's biography, the summation of the storms of his personal life and the pinnacle of his work. What are the circumstances in which this work was born? How did the philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer contribute to it? Why does Tristan continue to move today's composers and listeners?
