Using the example of the Curonian Spit, Sheikh Dance Theatre's performative installation of movement and live music "Islands" explores themes of sustainability, environmental protection, and the future of humanity. As a tribute to Nida's history, present and worrying future, the work presented at Nida Lighthouse in 2021 continues to travel anywhere, creating a symbolic image of a lighthouse. This time, in a contrasting space - the Liepkalnis water storage facility - Salos invites you to immerse yourself in an elemental state, created from minimalist music, movement, lights and abstract costumes. Upon entering the space, there is a feeling of gradual emptying - as if you were inside an hourglass. A storm greets the viewer, meditative music from the sands and cello reaches the ears, complemented by live cello. The minimalist composition by the renowned composer Žibuoklė Martinaitytė is made up of analogue sounds of sand and cello and fills the entire space with multi-channel sound.
In Islands, the audience is greeted by human-like figures, but their identities seem to have been erased, their bodies are gradually being swallowed by the sand, and the premonition tells us that the disappearance of the human figure is imminent. The installation thus draws you into a dreamlike and poetic state, in which the legends and history of Neringa seem to reoccur. Only now it is not the giant Neringa that is filling up the island, but irresponsible tourists, not sand but rubbish.
