"Across the vastness of the ancient ocean, a giant whale was drifting a flat disc of Earth. For eternity, it carried this unimaginable burden above the waves. One day, the Earth turned out to be round and the whale disappeared. It is possible that the newly discovered truth freed him from this cosmic duty and he sailed beyond comprehension. All that is left is a vague memory of a huge creature that once swam the boundless waters," reads the exhibition presentation. "Fountains of Joy is a project by Tomas Daukša that considers the limitations of the gaze, looking at something else, something unrecognisable and alien (possibly dangerous, but perhaps promising eternal bliss). It weaves together myths, speculative pseudo-theories, fragments of scientific knowledge and superstition into a viscous whole, leaving the viewer to find the most appropriate source of eternal joy. Tomas Daukša (b. 1988) is a young generation artist, who graduated from the Vilnius Academy of Arts with a Doctor of Arts degree in 2019. Since 2009 he has been actively participating in group exhibitions in Lithuania and abroad, and has held solo exhibitions. His work has been presented at international contemporary art fairs and major Lithuanian contemporary art institutions.
