The Contemporary Art Centre (CAC) in Vilnius Old Town is one of the largest contemporary art spaces in the Baltic region. It is a state budgetary institution established in 1992 by the Lithuanian Ministry of Culture. The CAC aims to enrich the cultural life of the city and the Lithuanian and international discourse on contemporary art, creating valuable professional opportunities for artists and other participants in the field of art.
The CAC organises 10 to 15 exhibitions each year, as well as performance, literary, and other events, screenings of films, and a wide educational programme and publishing projects. Every third year the CAC organises the Baltic Triennial, one of the most ambitious contemporary art events in the Baltic region. The CAC also cooperates with foreign biennials and art spaces to present the work of Lithuanian artists, and has organised the Lithuanian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale on several occasions.
The CAC Reading Room offers free access to the largest collection of contemporary art publications in Lithuania. Both the Reading Room and the CAC Cinema are convenient spaces for events organised alongside exhibitions and in cooperation with various initiatives. The CAC's open-air sculpture courtyard features a group of recently created artworks. The only permanent exhibition at the CAC is the Jurgis Mačiūnas Fluxus Cabinet, which displays part of the Fluxus art movement's renowned collection, amassed by Gilbert and Lila Silverman.
