March in Lithuania marks not only the beginning of spring, but also a number of important festivals and celebrations that are of great significance in the country's history and culture. Here are some of them:
8 March - International Women's Day
This day is celebrated as a day of women's rights and equality. Traditionally, on 8 March, men will give flowers and attention to women, and various events are organised to celebrate women's achievements in society, science, culture and other fields.
11 March - Lithuanian Independence Day
One of the country's most important holidays, commemorating 11 March 1990, when Lithuania's Supreme Council declared the restoration of independence from the Soviet Union. Ceremonies, concerts, exhibitions and other celebratory activities are held throughout the country on this day.
"Užgavėnės"
Although the date of the celebration of Midsummer varies, it can sometimes extend into early March. Užgavėnės is a traditional Lithuanian celebration that symbolises the end of winter and the beginning of spring. On this day, people wear masks, burn the Plague, eat pancakes and take part in various fun activities.
Kaziukas Fair
Although an unofficial celebration, the Kaziukas Fair is one of the most anticipated events of spring, usually taking place in early March in Vilnius. The fair sells handicrafts, ethnographic and national souvenirs, and hosts various cultural performances.
Spring Equinox
March is also the Spring Equinox, marking the day when day and night become equal in length. It is a natural event in the cycle of the year, symbolising the renewal of nature.
International days of commemoration
March also sees a number of international days, such as World Down Syndrome Day (21 March), World Poetry Day (21 March), and World Theatre Day (27 March), which promote public awareness of a range of social, cultural and educational issues.
