February is a short month, but it is full of celebrations and commemorations both in Lithuania and internationally. Here are some of the highlights:
14 February - St Valentine's Day
St Valentine's Day, or Love Day, is widely celebrated around the world as a lovers' holiday. In Lithuania, it is customary to give each other flowers, heart-shaped sweets and cards on this day.
16 February - Lithuanian State Restoration Day
Lithuanian State Restoration Day is one of the country's most important holidays, commemorating the Act of Independence of Lithuania signed on 16 February 1918. Various events, exhibitions, concerts and flag-raising ceremonies are organised on this day.
11 February - International Day for a Safe Internet
Safer Internet Day is a day to raise awareness of safe behaviour on the internet, especially among young people. It is celebrated on the second Tuesday of February each year.
Mardi Gras
While not specifically a February festival, as its date varies according to the Easter cycle, it is often celebrated in February or early March. It is a traditional Lithuanian celebration to banish winter and welcome spring with masks, traditional dishes and fun competitions.
International festivals
World Cancer Day (4 February) - World Cancer Day is dedicated to raising public awareness of cancer, its prevention, diagnosis and treatment.
International Day for Women and Girls in Science (11 February) - to promote gender equality in research and innovation.
