The city garden is the oldest park of 5.54 ha in the central part of the city (between Pulko, Birutė and S. Darius and S. Girėnos streets). Having become a symbol of Alytus in pre-war Lithuania, it has remained the pride of Alytus until now.
Construction of the park began in 1930. in a natural pine forest according to Eng. S. Taškūnas project. It is a geometric (regular) planning park with a 50-meter-diameter square in the middle, symbolizing the sun, from which straight paths stretch in six directions like rays, planted with avenues of deciduous trees and bushes. Later in the park according to Eng. V. Trečioka's project included a fountain with a round pool, a dance floor with stage, and two recreation areas. The decoration of the park was made by the gardener Hans Faituš, who graduated from the school of gardening in Frankfurt, planted roses and lilies blooming in the fountain.
The park was badly damaged in the summer of 1944, during the war. Its revival began in 1959, when the gardener Stasys Marcinkevičius took care of it. More than 30 types of trees and shrubs were planted, hedges were raised, and about twelve types of roses bloomed. in 1961 in the national inspection, the Alytus City Park was recognized as the best maintained park. in 1962 was awarded with an honorary letter from the Soviet Ministry of Culture and "Izvestia" newspaper. Since 1980, the park started to disappear again.
Big Dr. In 1992, under the care of Vytautas Nedzinskas, the Directorate of Parks was established (now VšĮ "Alytus Parkai"), which still takes care of the City Garden.
1997-1999 The city garden was reconstructed according to the project prepared by Klaipėda architects J. Kijauskienė and G. Garjonis, the paths were fixed, the event organization and two recreation areas were equipped, lighting, we can again enjoy the gushing fountain. After many years, the renewed rose again pleases the eye, blooming with the most beautiful flowers. Currently, 55 local and introduced species of trees and shrubs grow in the park. The park is proud of the only evergreen shrub of this age (more than 60 years) and height in Alytus - a European yew tree, a Japanese magnolia that blooms with white flowers in spring, a representative of the Lithuanian Red Book - a stemless oak.
In 1999, the old city park with the fountain was included in the list of urbanized areas of the Register of Immovable Cultural Values of the Republic of Lithuania.
