The Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul of Šiauliai is the centre of the Diocese of Šiauliai, established by Pope John Paul II in 1997. Following Pope John Paul II's visit to the Hill of Crosses, the Diocese of Šiauliai was established and the Church of Saints Peter and Paul of Šiauliai was given the title of cathedral. Pilgrims visiting the Hill of Crosses often stop to pray and visit Šiauliai Cathedral. During the summer, pilgrims arriving at Šiauliai Cathedral usually walk to the Hill of Crosses from here.
