Visaginas Museum is registered on 26 August 2021. There are dedicated premises in the city centre of Visaginas. The creation of the institution started from scratch. The municipality has allocated more than 300 sq. m of exhibition space for the museum.
Now it is necessary to prepare for a new leap in the museum's evolution - to think very carefully about the future path of the museum.
The museum is tasked to cover not only the history of the city of Visaginas, but also the history of nuclear energy in Lithuania, related to the construction of the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant and the present day.
In cooperation with Lithuanian energy experts, Visaginas residents and builders, the collection will be assembled to tell the unique history of Lithuania's youngest city.Visaginas is preparing to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2025.
Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant is always associated with the Astravas Nuclear Power Plant, which is so close to Vilnius. The allusion to this is very important for the exhibition being developed.
The possibilities for the development of the museum are very wide. We all need to answer the very important question of how Visaginas is relevant to the whole of Lithuania, what the exposition of the Visaginas Museum has to say, what the Visaginas Museum has to be like.
Using historical, cultural, scientific, museum, artistic and philosophical knowledge, revealing the local identity, promoting social dialogue, combining the historical memory with the future perspectives, we need to create a modern, contemporary, interactive museum. The museum must become a place of enjoyment, meetings and community events.
The Visaginas Museum is primarily aimed at the city's multicultural audience, which is culturally very active. It is home to over 40 nationalities. It is a cultural phenomenon that the museum will present to Lithuanian and foreign tourists as a unique phenomenon, as a history of the industrialisation of nuclear energy. The museum should also send a message to the world about our attitude towards the Astravas power plant.
Visaginas Museum is an institution whose aim is to talk about nuclear safety and to contribute to the understanding of the history of nuclear power. Lithuania had and has a nuclear power plant and this is a significant experience, a unique and interesting history.
