Žagarė

About

Among the many Jewish cultural heritage sites in Žagari, it is worth noting the complex of summer and winter synagogues in the very centre of the town, which is typical of Lithuanian shtetls.

Around the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, a complex of two white-plastered brick synagogues was built in the vicinity of the market square in Naujoji Žagarė. The larger and more ornate synagogue was the summer synagogue (P. Avižonio 7A), while the smaller synagogue, with a heating system, was used for prayers during the colder months of the year (P. Avižonio 5A).

The two synagogues of Naujoji Žagarė were rebuilt in the Soviet era and their functions were changed as well.
