French writer-storyteller, poet and critic. Member of the French Academy since 1671. Lawyer by education.

He wrote allegorical poems, odes and gallant verses. Having written fairy tales such as Little Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty, Puss in Boots, Donkey Skin, Cinderella, Bluebeard, etc. Based on the plots of his fairy tales, operas and ballets have been created. The most famous of them: J. Rossini's opera "Cinderella", B. Bartok's opera "Bluebeard's Castle", P. Tchaikovsky's ballet "Sleeping Beauty", S. Prokofiev's ballet "Cinderella".
