In 1965 graduated in scenography from the State Art Institute (now Vilnius Academy of Arts). 1991-1993 taught painting at the Vilnius Academy of Arts. Since 1960 he has participated in art exhibitions in Lithuania and abroad, and held solo exhibitions. Member of the Lithuanian Artists' Union since 1967, member of the group "24" since 1989. Illustrates his own and other authors' books. His work is included in various almanacs, collections and anthologies. Novels and poetry have been translated into German, Polish, Swedish, English, Russian and other languages. In 1997, an art film based on the novel "Wolf's Tooth Necklace" was made (director Algimantas Puipa).
