John Lewis was an American jazz pianist and composer. He was born on May 3, 1920, in the United States. Lewis was a prominent musician in the modern jazz movement of the 1940s and 1950s, and was known for his use of classical forms and instrumentation in his compositions. He was also a founding member of the Modern Jazz Quartet. Lewis died in 2001.
