Jiri Pauer was born on February 22, 1919 in Lubisin, near Kladno, Czechoslovakia. He studied privately with Otakar Sin then with Alois Habas (1943-46) at the Prague Conservatory, and finally with Pavel Borkovec. He has composed a considerable number of works, including the following for brass: "Concerto" (1958) for horn and orchestra, "Concerto" (1972) for trumpet and orchestra, "Trompettina" (1972) for trumpet and piano, "Trombonetta" (1974/75) for trombone and piano, "Tubonetta" (1976) for tuba and piano, "12 Duets" (1983) for 2 trumpets (or horns), Wind Quintet (1961), "Konzertmusik" (1971), "Intrada" for 3 pianos, 3 trumpets and 3 trombones (1975), "Charaktere" for brass quintet (1977/78) and "Trio" (1986) for 3 horns.
For 22 years he was the head of the Czech Philharmonic, and taught composition at the Prague Music Academy. Since 1980 he has been the director of the National Theater. His fame is worldwide.
