Austrian composer, organist, pedagogue. One of the most famous of the 19th century. symphonists of the second half. He studied music all his life almost independently. After graduating from the Linz teachers' seminary, he taught in the village in 1841-45. He made music in his spare time. From 1845 he taught, in 1850-55 he was also the organist of St. Florian Monastery. 1856–68 Linz Cathedral organist. From 1868 he lived in Vienna, taught at the conservatory; professor (1871). From 1875 he also lectured at the University of Vienna; honorary dr. (1891). Pupils - G. Mahler, A. Nikisch, H. Schenker. As a virtuoso organist and improviser, he performed in Paris (1869), London (1871), Switzerland (1880).
