Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco studied piano and composition in Florence. He was a composer inspired by the romantic traditions of Respighi and Richard Strauss. His music is warm, graceful, often virtuosic, and emotional. His Jewish heritage forced him to immigrate to the United States in 1939. His works are mostly unpublished, including eight operas, many film scores, ballets, oratorios, overtures, songs, and chamber music. He also wrote 33 songs based on Shakespeare's texts.
