was a Hungarian composer, pianist and conductor. He used the German form of his name in most of his published works.
1894-97 studied at the Budapest Music Academy. From 1905 to 1915 he taught playing the piano at the Berlin High School of Music; professor (1908). 1919-20 director of the Berlin Conservatory, later conductor of the Budapest Philharmonic Society (until 1944), 1931-44 also music director of the Hungarian Radio. 1934-43 director of the Budapest Academy of Music. He lived in the United States of America from 1949, taught at Florida State University. He performed as a pianist in Europe, the United States of America.
