Giovanni Gabrieli was an organist and the primary composer at St. Mark's Basilica in Venice from 1585 to 1612. He composed numerous church motets utilizing the 'cori spezzati' technique of multiple choirs, and taught prominent composers such as Heinrich Schütz. Gabrieli's most renowned piece is the Sonata pian e forte, which is notable for its dynamic range.
