Janáček studied in Prague, Leipzig, and Vienna. From 1881 to 1888 he worked as a conductor for the Philharmonic Society. After intensive training in folk music and speech melodies, he created his own style of composition. However, at that time Janáček was not yet important in Prague. That changed quickly after he wrote his original opera "Jenufa" in 1904, which was staged in 1916 in Prague and later in Vienna. In 1919, Janáček became a composition professor at the Prague Conservatory, which he led until 1925. His late operas "Katja Kabanova" (1921) and "Das schlaue Füchslein" ("The Cunning Little Vixen", 1924) became huge successes. Janáček died on August 12, 1928 in Ostrava.
