Birth history: After World War II, Ligeti lived in Budapest, where he completed his studies at the conservatory. There he studied harmony, counterpoint, and analysis until the Hungarian Uprising. After leaving for the West in 1956, he met Eimert, Stockhausen, and Koenig in Cologne. His 1960 work 'Aventures' was a breakthrough in modern music. From 1959 to 1969, Ligeti lived in Vienna, later in Berlin, and from 1973 in Hamburg. In 1989 he stopped teaching at the conservatory and started focusing solely on his creative work. Ligeti was interviewed by Richard Dufallo at the Plaza Hotel in New York in November of 1986. He was moved by Béla Bartók as a young man, but never met him. For three months he lived with Karlheinz Stockhausen in Germany as a student, where Stockhausen organized the first major performances of Ligeti's works. His music 'Atmospheres' was used in the film '2001: A Space Odyssey'. (Contributed by .)
