Biography

Benedetto Marcello was born on either 31 July or 2 August in 1686. He studied under Lotti and Gasparini before becoming a member of the Venetian Council of Forty in 1711. From 1730-1738, he served as governor of Pola in Istria and later became a papal chamberlain at Brescia in 1738. Marcello also translated John Dryden's "Timotheus." In 1709, he wrote a libretto for G. Ruggeri's opera "Arato in Sparta," and in 1720, he penned "Il teatro alla moda," a satirical take on contemporary operatic practices. Dr. Siegfried Kruse contributed this information.
