Polish composer, conductor. One of the most prominent creators of Polish music romanticism next to F. F. Chopin.
1827-1830 studied music in Warsaw with A. Frejeri, 1837-1840. – in Berlin at K. Rungenhagen's. 1840-1858 lived in Vilnius. 1840-1842 St. John's Church organist, conductor of the Vilnius City Theater orchestra for several years, taught music privately (Cezaris Kiuji, Janas Karlovičius among his students). He actively participated in the city's musical life, formed amateur ensembles, organized concerts, and in 1854 led the founded by St. Cecilia Society, took care of sheet music publishing.
In Vilnius, he created cantatas with a Lithuanian theme "Milda", "Nijolė", "Namų dainyno" songs (I-VI collections), 4 "Litanies of the Gates of Dawn", stage works. in 1848 January 1 the premiere of the opera "Halka" took place in the town hall (version I, concert performance, conducted by S. Moniuška himself), in 1854 February 28 there the opera is staged. in 1849 In St. Petersburg, he conducted the cantata "Milda" and the fantastic overture "Pasaka", which received favorable reviews. 1846, 1847, 1851 visited Warsaw, established contacts with Polish writers, composers, took care of the premiere of "Halka" in the Grand Theater - there in 1858.
