Nijolė Ambrazaitytė was born on February 21, 1939 in the village of Burokai, in the Lazdijai district. On May 22, 1948, before the end of the school year, she was deported together with her grandparents, her mother's sister and their family to the Krasnoyarsk region. Their first stop was Igarka, where they were subjected to misery until 1956. They then moved to Maklakovo from 1956-1957. After returning to Lithuania, she graduated from Raseiniai Secondary School. Between 1959-1966, she studied solo singing at the Lithuanian State Conservatory (now the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre) with Elena Mažrimaitė-Dirsenė. From 1966-1999, she was a soloist at the Lithuanian Opera and Ballet Theatre. Between 1990-1992, she was a deputy for the Supreme Council and the Restored Parliament, and then served as a member of parliament and chairman of the Vilnius Exiles' Cultural Commission from 1992-1996 and again from 1996-2000. While still studying solo singing, in 1964, she created her first role on the Opera and Ballet's stage (Lola in P. Mascagni's "Cavalleria Rusticana"). Her diploma work was the role of Eboli in the opera "Don Carlos," which is one of the most complex mezzo-soprano repertoire. She created about 30 roles in operas and performed over 400 solo concerts. She participated in more than 3,000 concerts in different programs in Lithuania and abroad. She recorded and released 8 records, with about 24 hours of various music. She performed works by composers such as W.A. Mozart, J.S. Bach, G.F. Handel, F. Schubert, J. Brahms, A. Dvořák, and H. Berlioz. In operas, she created the roles of Carmen, Amneris, Charlotte, Adalgisa, Mirta, Eboli, Azucena, Maddalena, Fenena, Marina Mniszek and Ortruda. She was the first performer of works by Lithuanian composers V. Laurušas, E. Balsys, A. Bražinskas, K. Brundzaite, F. Bajoras, V. Telskys, and others. She also performed solo parts in J.S. Bach's "Christmas Oratorio" and Mass in B Minor, G.F. Handel's "Judas Maccabaeus," "Samson," L. van Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and "Missa Solemnis," D. Verdi, and A. Dvořák's works, V.A. Mozart's "Requiem," E. Balsys's oratorio "Do Not Touch the Blue Mantle." Nijolė completed her long-standing work at the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre on February 20, 1999, with a performance of G. Verdi's "Aida" dedicated to her 60th jubilee. This was her last appearance on the Opera and Ballet's stage. She also participated in concerts and shows in Mongolia, the USA, Canada, Australia, Italy, Spain, Finland, Chile, Peru, Cuba, Bulgaria, Romania and visited many cities and towns in Russia.
