Markus Götz was born on May 19, 1973 in Schopfheim. As a student he took trumpet lessons at the music school and played in several clubs and orchestras. After graduating from high school, Markus Götz studied musicology, history and philosophy in Freiburg im Breisgau. There he was also a student of the well-known American jazz trumpeter Gary Barone (Stan Kenton Big Band, Frank Zappa) at the Freiburg Jazz and Rock School. In addition to arranging lessons with Bernhard G. Hoffmann, he benefited from many composition courses with Jacob de Haan, Stephen Melillo, Thomas Doss, Philipp Wilby and James Barnes, among others.
He is currently working as a history and music teacher in Riehen (CH) and as a trumpet teacher and leader of the big band at the "Middle Wiesental Music School". In addition, he works at other schools and repeatedly shows his pedagogical versatility in the variety of his tasks and projects: Markus Götz leads orchestra rehearsals, conducts choirs, coaches jazz bands and runs improvisation courses. Another focus of his educational work are major musical projects such as his own musicals "Pirates, Pirates!", "Johannes - The Voice from the Desert" and "Canterville". In Switzerland he became a specialist in the field of class music: performances such as "Carnival of the Animals" with a sixth grader or "Cinema in Concert" (with seventh graders) demanded his arranging and organizational skills.
Markus Götz began composing as a student. His first piece for wind orchestra, Festlicher March, was played by the Fahrnau Youth Wind Orchestra. At the age of 18 one of his compositions - Capriccio for trumpet and piano - was published. As a composer for wind band he won several prizes: "African Inspirations" received a special prize at the composer workshop in Saxony in 2002 and a year later "Adebars Reise" received the audience prize and a first prize from the jury at the same competition. In addition, Markus Götz received a composition promotion award from the European business foundation "Pro Europa". In addition to "Adebars Reise" and "Silva Nigra", "Montanas del Fuego" and "Adventure!" are among his successful works for wind orchestra. The fruitful collaboration with the music publisher RUNDEL is reflected in a wide range of compositions and arrangements of varying degrees of difficulty. Markus Götz has received several commissions to compose and is increasingly on the road as a lecturer and conductor of his own works.
In addition to the brass band and musicals, his great love is still jazz. Again and again Markus Götz is drawn to the stage with his own jazz quartet or as a guest in other formations.
