He published the first poem in 1936, the last in 1944. October month. The first poems were published in the futurists' magazines "Ateities Spinduliai" and "Ateitis" (V. Mačernis himself was actively involved in the activities of this organization at the beginning of his work). Later he wrote visions, sonnets, triolets, hymns, short aphoristic poems.
The only cycle that he managed to finish was "Visions" (1939-1942). Also created 81 of the 96 planned sonnets for the "Years" cycle, 14 "Songs of myself" hymns. There are his well-known short stories "I brought you the sunrise", "Bank of Peace", "Vanity".He wrote the beginning of the philosophical poem "The naked heart of a man", translated a lot from foreign languages.The first books were published in the post-war years in Western Europe and the USA ("Vizijos" was published in Rome in 1947, after Vytautas Sauliis prepared it for the press, "Poezija" - in Chicago, in 1961; edited by Kazys Bradūnas). Meanwhile, in Soviet Lithuania, the poetry of V. Mačernis was ignored until finally in 1970. the collection of poetry "Man's naked heart" was published. in 1990 Vytautas Kubilius prepared a comprehensive collection of Macernis's work "Under the misty sky of uncertainty", 2015. - an even more comprehensive collection of works "I liked only deep waters", which also included two previously unpublished poems.
